It&#8217;ll be creepier."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p> <br>By\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/authors\/dylan\">Dylan Matthews<\/a> &#8211; When I heard five or so years back that people in Silicon Valley were getting worried about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/future-perfect\/2018\/12\/21\/18126576\/ai-artificial-intelligence-machine-learning-safety-alignment\">artificial intelligence<\/a>&nbsp;causing human extinction, my initial reaction was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2015\/8\/10\/9124145\/effective-altruism-global-ai\">extreme skepticism<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cyberconservices.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/binary-2175285__340-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31523\" width=\"377\" height=\"232\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A large reason for that was that the scenario just felt silly. What did these folks think would happen \u2014 was some company going to build Skynet and manufacture Terminator robots to slaughter anyone who stood in their way? It felt like a sci-fi fantasy, not a real problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a misperception that frustrates a lot of <strong>AI <\/strong>researchers. Nate Soares, who runs the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligence.org\/\">Machine Intelligence Research Institute<\/a>, which focuses on <strong>AI<\/strong> safety, has argued a better analogy than the Terminator is the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nautil.us\/issue\/58\/self\/scary-ai-is-more-fantasia-than-terminator\">\u201cSorcerer\u2019s Apprentice\u201d scene in\u00a0<em>Fantasia<\/em><\/a>. The problem isn\u2019t that AI will suddenly decide we all need to die; the problem is that we might give it instructions that are vague or incomplete and that lead to the <strong>AI <\/strong>following our orders in ways we didn\u2019t intend.  <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Read more:  (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/future-perfect\/2019\/3\/26\/18281297\/ai-artificial-intelligence-safety-disaster-scenarios\" target=\"_blank\">Read more: <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RB Note: <\/strong>Considering how easily influenced the huddled masses are already it would seem we are ripe for the picking.
