The key to making it happen is an<strong> Internet of Things<\/strong> system that includes sensors embedded in the roadway and on traffic lights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Existing intelligent transportation systems provide some of those features. Information gathered by traffic-monitoring cameras, for example, is being used to adjust traffic signals in real time to ease congestion. Sensor-equipped parking lots can notify drivers of empty spots via their smartphone. And there are some <strong>IoT<\/strong> pilot projects, like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcrwireless.com\/20160714\/internet-of-things\/cisco-austria-smart-roads-tag31-tag99\">Austria\u2019s Autobahn<\/a>, which uses\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/en\/us\/solutions\/industries\/transportation\/connected-roadways.html\">Cisco\u2019s Connected Roadways system<\/a>\u00a0to link 70,000\u00a0sensors and 6,500\u00a0traffic cameras to monitor traffic and road conditions. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?rct=j&amp;sa=t&amp;url=https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/the-institute\/ieee-products-services\/internet-of-things-technology-will-connect-highways-street-lights-and-vehicles&amp;ct=ga&amp;cd=CAEYCioUMTc0MDQwOTY3NjA3MTIwMzM2MzUyGmEyZDc1YTAxNDlhODIxZDc6Y29tOmVuOlVT&amp;usg=AFQjCNGgPvceFIBvVO5mPpzyiHCTWKW4tQ\">Read more: <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By\u00a0Kathy Pretz &#8211; As more and more intelligent cars and autonomous vehicles hit the road, some engineers are thinking about what can be done to smarten up the streets on which they travel.
