While some may still wonder, \u201cwhat can AI do for us?,” many more may be asking, “what can AI do to us?\u201d given some recent tragic events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crashes of the Boeing 737 MAXs and\u00a0Uber<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Tesla\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0self-driving car fatalities point to AI\u2019<\/strong>s unintended consequences and highlight how technologists as well as users of AI have both fallen short at making proper guardrails in deploying AI technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People often think of AI <\/strong>as the panacea that will enable technology to solve our most pressing problems. In that way, AI<\/strong> brings to mind a seeming panacea of an earlier age: aspirin. Even now, medical research continues to expand the list of applicable diseases aspirin can help treat. But that panacea comes with important parameters.
