It is seen by many as a technology that is going to cause a tectonic shift in the way we live our lives. And why not? It has so many applications across various disciplines and it touches some or the other aspect of our lives.

But then why do we come across concerns and questions that make us think twice before really adopting this technology. Concerns such as AI is going to take over our jobs, AI is going to rule the world, AI is going to enslave us, etc. One reason why that happens is because of our incorrect understanding of the technology. Let us deep dive a little bit into the origins and history of AI.

The term ‘Artificial Intelligence’ was first coined at Dartmouth University in 1956, however applications of AI dates back to 2nd World War.

Alan Turing and his team of cryptographers designed the Bombe machine to decipher the Enigma codes used by the Axis Powers to send messages. This was seen as a major application of an ‘intelligent’ algorithm. Alan Turing himself was elemental in the development of intelligent machines by providing a formalization of the concepts of algorithm and computation. His further development of Turing Machine and Turing Test (a standard used for a machine to be called ‘Intelligent’) led to an explosive growth of this field. For his contributions, Alan Turing is often referred to as the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence. Read On:

By Ishan Choudhary – Artificial Intelligence or AI has been the buzz word of the 21st century.
