{"id":34389,"date":"2020-06-18T04:05:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-18T08:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.cybercon1.com\/?p=34389"},"modified":"2020-06-18T04:05:00","modified_gmt":"2020-06-18T08:05:00","slug":"facial-recognition-bans-what-do-they-mean-for-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.cyberconservices.com\/index.php\/2020\/06\/18\/facial-recognition-bans-what-do-they-mean-for-ai\/","title":{"rendered":"Facial Recognition Bans: What Do They Mean For AI"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This week IBM, Microsoft and Amazon announced that they would suspend the sale of their facial recognition technology to law enforcement agencies.&nbsp;It\u2019s yet another sign of the dramatic impact of the protests for social justice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.pixabay.com\/photo\/2018\/03\/23\/08\/09\/flat-3252983__340.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"866\" height=\"738\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But the moves from the tech giants also illustrate the inherent risks of AI, especially when it comes to bias and the potential for invasion of privacy.&nbsp; Note that there are already indications that Congress will take action to regulate the technology. &nbsp;In the meantime, many cities have already instituted bans, such San Francisco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of the advances of deep learning and faster systems for processing enormous amounts of data, facial recognition has certainly seen major strides over the past decade.\u00a0Yet there is still much to be done.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAI face recognition technology is damn good, but it is not very robust,\u201d said Ken Bodnar, who is an AI researcher.\u00a0\u201cThis means that the neural network is well trained and capable of amazing feats of identification, but if one little parameter is off, it mis-identifies you. The way that it works, is that everything is a probability with AI. So when it looks at a face, it has a range of proprietary algorithms and parameters it measures.
