By 2023 it\u2019s estimated that companies worldwide will invest $1.1 trillion in <strong>Internet of Things<\/strong> technologies, while the number of connections is forecast to top 3.5 billion devices and sensors according to market intelligence company IDC. This is one step towards creating the digital-defined business, where data drives decision making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.pixabay.com\/photo\/2017\/09\/25\/11\/54\/fittings-2784899__340.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"705\" height=\"475\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018haves\u2019 and \u2018have nots\u2019 of the business world are becoming increasingly obvious,\u201d says Anne Sheehan, director of Vodafone Business UK. \u201cAnd it is technologies such as <strong>IoT <\/strong>that are proving to be the differentiator to introduce more efficient processes or generate new revenues.\u201d Sheehan points to the company\u2019s recent report into the Internet of Things, which found that 87 per cent of UK businesses that implemented <strong>Internet of Things <\/strong>technologies have already seen tangible returns. \u201cThis is a competitive edge today that will only become more apparent as we move forward,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what do those numbers actually mean? Well, take the water that comes out the tap in your kitchen. Across the UK, about 23 per cent of the water that runs through underground pipes is lost to leakage, more than three billion litres of water a day \u2013 or 1,200 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The industry has set itself the target of reducing water leakage levels by 15 per cent in the next five years \u2013 but some are going further still.
