It\u2019s old news that <strong>AI<\/strong> have bested humans at their own games, specifically things like Chess and Go, but there\u2019s more to our brains than checking a king. There are subtler skills like inference and intuition\u2014squishier, almost subconscious concepts that help us understand and predict the actions of others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0\" data-node-id=\"3\">But with the advent of advanced <strong>AI<\/strong> platforms like Open <strong>AI<\/strong>\u2019s Generative Pre-training Transformer (GPT), even those boundaries between man and machine&nbsp;<a class=\"body-link css-3wjtm9 et3p2gv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discovermagazine.com\/mind\/ai-chatbot-spontaneously-develops-a-theory-of-mind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.discovermagazine.com\/mind\/ai-chatbot-spontaneously-develops-a-theory-of-mind\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"are beginning to fade\">are beginning to fade<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"3\">A new study conducted by Michal Kosinski, a computational psychologist from Stanford University, used several iterations of OpenAI\u2019s GPT neural network\u2014from GPT-1 to the latest GPT-3.5\u2014to perform \u201cTheory of Mind\u201d (ToM) tests, a series of experiments&nbsp;<a class=\"body-link css-3wjtm9 et3p2gv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/behavioral-and-brain-sciences\/article\/does-the-chimpanzee-have-a-theory-of-mind\/1E96B02CD9850016B7C93BC6D2FEF1D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/behavioral-and-brain-sciences\/article\/does-the-chimpanzee-have-a-theory-of-mind\/1E96B02CD9850016B7C93BC6D2FEF1D0\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"first developed in 1978\"><u>first developed in 1978<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;to measure the complexity of a chimpanzee\u2019s mind to predict the behavior of others.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"3\">These tests involve solving normal, mundane scenarios that humans could easily deduce the outcome. For example, one scenario involves mislabeling a bag of popcorn as \u201cchocolate\u201d and then the test asks the AI to infer what the human\u2019s response will be once the bag is opened. Kosinski\u2019s team used \u201csanity checks\u201d to analyze how well GPT networks understood the scenario and the human\u2019s predicted response.
