{"id":76620,"date":"2023-03-30T02:55:36","date_gmt":"2023-03-30T06:55:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.cybercon1.com\/?p=76620"},"modified":"2023-04-09T13:59:02","modified_gmt":"2023-04-09T17:59:02","slug":"the-case-for-slowing-down-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.cyberconservices.com\/index.php\/2023\/03\/30\/the-case-for-slowing-down-ai\/","title":{"rendered":"The case for slowing down AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Obviously this is a bit apocalyptic but given the human propensity to ready, fire, aim who&#8217;s to say.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mgcv3W\">\u201cComputers need to be accountable to machines,\u201d a top Microsoft executive told a roomful of reporters in Washington, DC, on February 10, three days after the company&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/2023\/2\/7\/23590069\/bing-openai-microsoft-google-bard\">launched<\/a>&nbsp;its new <strong>AI<\/strong>-powered Bing search engine.<\/p>\n<p id=\"b0gSYM\">Everyone laughed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"m-ad m-ad__dynamic_ad_unit mb-3 m-ad__desktop_feature_body_eoy_slot\" data-concert-ads-name=\"desktop_feature_body_eoy_slot\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-desktop_feature_body_eoy_slot\" class=\"dynamic-js-slot\"><span style=\"color: black;\">\u201cSorry! Computers need to be accountable to <\/span><em style=\"color: black;\">people<\/em><span style=\"color: black;\">!\u201d he said, and then made sure to clarify, \u201cThat was&nbsp;<\/span><em style=\"color: black;\">not<\/em><span style=\"color: black;\">&nbsp;a Freudian slip.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"WmTTFG\">Slip or not, the laughter in the room betrayed a latent anxiety. Progress in artificial intelligence has been moving so unbelievably fast lately that the question is becoming unavoidable: How long until <strong>AI<\/strong> dominates our world to the point where we\u2019re answering to it rather than it answering to us?<\/p>\n<div class=\"m-ad m-ad__dynamic_ad_unit m-ad__desktop_feature_body\" data-concert-ads-name=\"desktop_feature_body\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-desktop_feature_body\" class=\"dynamic-js-slot\"><span style=\"color: black;\">First, last year, we got <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/future-perfect\/23023538\/ai-dalle-2-openai-bias-gpt-3-incentives\">DALL-E 2<\/a><span style=\"color: black;\">&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/2023\/1\/5\/23539055\/generative-ai-chatgpt-stable-diffusion-lensa-dall-e\">Stable Diffusion<\/a><span style=\"color: black;\">, which can turn a few words of text into a stunning image. Then Microsoft-backed OpenAI gave us ChatGPT, which can write essays so convincing that it freaks out everyone from teachers (what if it helps students cheat?) to&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2023\/01\/31\/1067436\/could-chatgpt-do-my-job\/\">journalists<\/a><span style=\"color: black;\">&nbsp;(could it replace them?) to&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/08\/technology\/ai-chatbots-disinformation.html\">disinformation experts<\/a><span style=\"color: black;\">&nbsp;(will it amplify conspiracy theories?). And in February, we got Bing&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/16\/technology\/bing-chatbot-transcript.html\">(a.k.a. Sydney)<\/a><span style=\"color: black;\">, the chatbot that both&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/08\/technology\/microsoft-bing-openai-artificial-intelligence.html\">delighted<\/a><span style=\"color: black;\">&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/16\/technology\/bing-chatbot-microsoft-chatgpt.html\">disturbed<\/a><span style=\"color: black;\">&nbsp;beta users with eerie interactions. Now we\u2019ve got&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/research\/gpt-4\">GPT-4<\/a><span style=\"color: black;\">&nbsp;\u2014 not just the latest large language model, but a multimodal one that&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2023\/03\/14\/1069823\/gpt-4-is-bigger-and-better-chatgpt-openai\/\">can respond<\/a><span style=\"color: black;\">&nbsp;to text as well as images.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"QHeSA7\">Fear of falling behind Microsoft has prompted Google and Baidu&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/future-perfect\/23591534\/chatgpt-artificial-intelligence-google-baidu-microsoft-openai\">to accelerate<\/a>&nbsp;the launch of their own rival chatbots. The <strong>AI<\/strong> race is clearly on.<\/p>\n<p id=\"n3HcWB\">But is racing such a great idea?
