By\u00a0Sigal Samuel<\/span><\/a><\/span> –\u00a0Major AI companies are racing to build superintelligent AI \u2014 for the benefit of you and me, they say. But did they ever pause to ask whether we actually want that?<\/p>\n

Americans, by and large,\u00a0don\u2019t<\/em>\u00a0want it.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the upshot of a new poll shared exclusively with Vox. The poll, commissioned by the think tank\u00a0AI Policy Institute<\/a>\u00a0and conducted by YouGov, surveyed 1,118 Americans from across the age, gender, race, and political spectrums in early September. It reveals that 63 percent of voters say regulation should aim to\u00a0<\/em>actively prevent AI superintelligence.<\/p>\n

Companies like OpenAI have made it clear that superintelligent AI \u2014 a system that is smarter than humans \u2014 is exactly what they\u2019re trying to build. They call it artificial general intelligence (AGI) and they take it for granted that AGI should exist. \u201cOur mission,\u201d\u00a0OpenAI\u2019s website says<\/a>, \u201cis to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n

But there\u2019s a deeply weird and seldom remarked upon fact here: It\u2019s not at all obvious that we should want to create AGI \u2014 which, as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will be the first to\u00a0tell<\/a>\u00a0you, comes with major risks, including the risk that all of humanity gets wiped out. And yet a handful of CEOs have decided, on behalf of everyone else, that AGI should exist.<\/p>\n
