But as we stand on the cusp of a new year, it\u2019s worth reflecting on the progress AI has made over the past twelve months, as well as what might lie ahead for the technology in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>2023 was undoubtedly a monumental year for AI, but fear and speculation often dominated the headlines. 2023 saw the rise of the\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/digital-assets\/2023\/03\/30\/we-should-welcome-the-new-ai-doomerism\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/digital-assets\/2023\/03\/30\/we-should-welcome-the-new-ai-doomerism\/\" target=\"_self\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/digital-assets\/2023\/03\/30\/we-should-welcome-the-new-ai-doomerism\/\" aria-label=\"AI doomers\" rel=\"noopener\">AI doomers<\/a>, with online\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6266923\/ai-eliezer-yudkowsky-open-letter-not-enough\/\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6266923\/ai-eliezer-yudkowsky-open-letter-not-enough\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/time.com\/6266923\/ai-eliezer-yudkowsky-open-letter-not-enough\/\" aria-label=\"commentators\">commentators<\/a>\u00a0like Eliezer Yudkowsky rising to prominence for warning that AI poses existential risks to humanity. Adding to this air of pessimism was a high-profile\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/futureoflife.org\/open-letter\/pause-giant-ai-experiments\/\" href=\"https:\/\/futureoflife.org\/open-letter\/pause-giant-ai-experiments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/futureoflife.org\/open-letter\/pause-giant-ai-experiments\/\" aria-label=\"open letter\">open letter<\/a>\u00a0from leaders of the tech industry, calling for a 6-month pause on the most powerful AI research so experts can assess risks and create safety protocols.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the merits of such proposals, slamming the brakes on AI is unlikely to happen any time soon. Even if it were politically feasible to stop progress, it would be a strategic blunder to do so, when this would only put western democracies at a disadvantage relative to adversaries like Russia and China.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, even those actively calling for a pause don\u2019t seem to take the idea seriously. Signees of the letter, like Elon Musk, are moving forward with their own AI models regardless.
