Conversational AI chatbots like ChatGPT can suggest the next verse in a song or poem. Software like DALL-E or Midjourney can create original art or realistic images from natural language descriptions. Code completion tools like GitHub Copilot can recommend the next few lines of code.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><main id=\"post__content\" class=\"post__content category \" aria-label=\"\">But generative AI is not predictive AI. Predictive AI is its own class of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/topics\/artificial-intelligence\">artificial intelligence<\/a>, and while it might be a lesser-known approach, it\u2019s still a powerful tool for businesses. Let\u2019s examine the two technologies and the key differences between each.<\/main><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is generative AI?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.ibm.com\/blog\/what-is-generative-AI\">Generative AI\u00a0<\/a>(gen AI) is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/topics\/artificial-intelligence\">artificial intelligence<\/a>\u00a0that responds to a user\u2019s prompt or request with generated original content, such as audio, images, software code, text or video.<\/p>\n<p>Gen AI models are trained on massive volumes of raw data. These models then draw from the encoded patterns and relationships in their training data to understand user requests and create relevant new content that\u2019s similar, but not identical, to the original data.<\/p>\n<p>Most generative AI models start with a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/research.ibm.com\/blog\/what-are-foundation-models\">foundation model<\/a>, a type of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/topics\/deep-learning\">deep learning<\/a>\u00a0model that \u201clearns\u201d to generate statistically probable outputs when prompted.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/topics\/large-language-models\">Large language models\u00a0<\/a>(LLMs) are a common foundation model for text generation, but other foundation models exist for different types of content generation.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is predictive AI?<\/h2>\n<p>Predictive AI blends statistical analysis with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/topics\/machine-learning\">machine learning<\/a>\u00a0algorithms to find data patterns and forecast future outcomes. It extracts insights from historical data to make accurate predictions about the most likely upcoming event, result or trend.<\/p>\n<p>Predictive AI models enhance the speed and precision of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/topics\/predictive-analytics\">predictive analytics<\/a>\u00a0and are typically used for business\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/think\/topics\/forecasting\">forecasting<\/a> to project sales, estimate product or service demand, personalize customer experiences and optimize logistics.
