According to the Federal Communications Commission, the rules cover \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=111346X1569483&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/document\/fcc-adds-foreign-produced-power-inverters-and-robots-covered-list-0&amp;xcust=2-0-3203877-1-0-0-0-0&amp;sref=https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/3203877\/the-fcc-just-changed-the-rules-for-robot-vacuums-heres-what-it-means-for-yours.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-subtag=\"2-0-3203877-1-0-0-0-0\" data-domain-name=\"fcc\">mobile robots, such as humanoids and quadrupeds<\/a>,\u201d as well as autonomous mobile robots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yes, this includes robot vacuums.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"but-why-though\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">But why, though?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It boils down to national security concerns, really. Officials are worried that connected robots, including some robot vacuums, could potentially collect sensitive information like home layouts, camera images, and other data. Since many modern robot vacuums need an internet connection and rely on cloud services, the government says they could introduce new cybersecurity risks if they aren\u2019t properly secured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They could also potentially be exploited for remote access. Remember when The Verge\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=111346X1569483&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/925696\/yarbo-robot-lawn-mower-hack-remote-control-camera-access-mqtt&amp;xcust=2-0-3203877-1-0-0-0-0&amp;sref=https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/3203877\/the-fcc-just-changed-the-rules-for-robot-vacuums-heres-what-it-means-for-yours.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-subtag=\"2-0-3203877-1-0-0-0-0\" data-domain-name=\"theverge\">deliberately hacked<\/a>\u00a0a robot lawn mower to prove a point? Just some food for thought.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This concern makes more sense when you look at what today\u2019s high-end robot vacuums are actually capable of. Many of them now have cameras, LiDAR sensors, and AI-powered object recognition.
